Maulana Husain Ahmad Madni (1879-1957) was an Islamic scholar of international repute and a stalwart of India’s freedom struggle. His contribution to India’s emergence as a secular democratic nation-state ranks with that of Mahatma Gandhi, Maulana Azad and Jawaharlal Nehru. As an anti-imperialist crusader he spent long years in British jails between 1914 and 1947. His most outstanding contribution is his theoretical tract Islam aur Muttahida Qaumiyat (United Nationalism and Islam). He carried on uncompromising campaign against Two-Nation Theory and opposed Muslim League’s attempt at partitioning India .
The distinguishing feature of his career is that he rendered all the service and made sacrifices ungrudgingly without expectation of any reward. He refused to accept an award from the government of free India also lest it should diminish his value as in independent guide of government and people. After independence he devoted himself to the Muslims face and adjust to the trials and tribulations to which Partition confronted them. Relinguishing political activity he devoted himself in the years of independence entirely to developing the Darul Uloom Deoband, his ulmamater, and instilling confidence in the Muslim community of free India .
It is unfortunate that his role has been ignored in academic and political discourse during these years. The lapse has introduced many distortions in our political life and understanding of the history of freedom movement as also deprived the Muslim community of valuable advice regarding harmonious coexistence as a minority that is accorded equal rights in the Constitution. This study is an attempt to fill the gap and draw the attention of academic community to some crucial questions related to contemporary politics.
