What teachers might wish to know about this book -

"A Learner's Book on Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (SAAS), Ramadan and Hajj" gives an unbiased overview of Islam and clarifies aspects of the religion which are commonly misunderstood. It is short (160 pages), yet comprehensive, and covers all the main points that a learner needs to know about the essentials of Islam, especially when undertaking comparative religious studies. Aimed at early secondary school students, it would be equally useful for upper juniors as a textbook, or as a resource book for teachers. The presentation is clear with good graphic signposts, and it is written in an uncluttered, flowing style. Throughout the process of writing this book, Istafiah referred to her husband - a teacher with many years' experience - for advice and guidance to ensure that both stylistically and in content it would be easy for learners and teachers to use.

Placing Islam into a historical context, "A Learner's Book on Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (SAAS), Ramadan and Hajj" covers the following main topics in an easily accessible format:

* the story of the Prophet and the history of Islam up to the time of his death, focusing in part on the character of the Prophet;* the legacy of the Prophet and what his influence and the growth of Islam brought to the world;* what it means to be a Muslim;* the Fast of Ramadan which is followed by the feast of Eid'ul Fitr; and the history and practice of the Hajj, and the festival known as Eid'ul Adha, including a description of what the Hajj experience can mean to a Muslim.

There is also a bibliography and glossary of commonly used Islamic terms and names at the back of the book - ideal when undertaking project work. In Cape Town this book received considerable acclaim by the Muslim community, and the author was invited to speak at one of the top schools for girls in Cape Town. Additionally, Mr Asmal, the Minister for Education in South Africa, has described it as 'a must-read book for young and old'.

About the AuthorIstafiah Is'harc has lived and studied in India, England, Russia and Indonesia, and has also travelled widely. While observing the Fast of Ramadan with her Indonesian hosts in the late '60s, she felt strongly drawn to Islam from within, since which time Islam has become an integral part of her life. She gained a degree in History of Indonesia from the University of Jakarta, and in 1972 returned to London to marry her Cape Malay husband, son of the late Sheikh Muhammad Ghairuddin, a well-known and highly respected imam in South Africa. This brought her into contact with another rich Islamic culture and community, reminiscent of what she had experienced in Indonesia.

She has given talks on Islam and is currently a researcher for a major European company. She lives in London with her husband and one of her adult children. Although she has written many articles, A Learner's Book on Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (SAAS), Ramadan & Hajj is her first book.
